Auburn University, like every major college, provides a summer orientation program to help incoming students get a grasp of things around campus. Though they do a great job, this orientation program may not quite tell you everything that you really need to know. But that's where I come in. Here are five practical facts that you will need to know to be successful at Auburn. 1. Ralph Brown Draughon Library - This is the place to be if you need to study or would like to meet your friends and just pretend to study. The library is divided into floors each of which have computers that students can use by typing in their Auburn user ID names and passwords. The floors are intended to be divided by amount of noise so that the 2nd floor (actually ground level) is the noisiest and the 4th floor is the quietest. This means that you can get a coffee treat from the coffee shop on the 2nd floor, meet your friends, and do some chatting, but then later head up to the 4th floor to do some silent studying. The library is a great place to get work done and is also a free source to some awesome free magazines and newspapers like The New Yorker and USA Today. Just ask someone who works there where you can find them. Not many people take advantage of these resources, so be one of the few. 2. Parking Woes - The parking situation at Auburn is something that many students complain about. The truth is there are not very many places to park and whenever you do find a place it is highly questionable whether or not it is "legal" according to University parking rules to park there. Each student who wishes to park on campus must pay a small fee to get a tag that allows them to park only in specific areas. During certain times of the day, on certain days, and at certain parking areas, you are free to park even without the right parking pass. The problem is that these rules are hard to grasp and change from time to time without you knowing. Most students end up getting a parking ticket or two because of this and with a minimum of $50 and a thousand technicalities they can get you with, they can really add up. If you're wise, you'll not move you car from any safe zones unless you have to. 3. Expensive on Campus Food- Some of us have enough money to not pay much attention to how much we're spending on food, and the University knows that students who have parents paying for them are often in this category. Because of this, food on campus is marked up a significant amount. That is not to say that eating on campus is something to be avoided always, since the food on campus is really very good. However, unless you think you can afford it, eating on campus every day is not the best idea. The most disturbing mark-ups are at coffee shops where small impulse treats can be $4 for a candy bar or a small latte. If you're wary of spending too much, keep an eye on prices. They are counting on you not being used to buying things, so they will take advantage. 4. Go to Class - If you had any friends like mine in High School, you will be hearing from a few people that college is not really that hard and you don't even have to go to class! This may have been true years ago, but at Auburn most classes take attendance and most classes will penalize you severely for missing (some take letter grades off, while others simply fail students who miss). So for your own good drag yourself out of bed and attend those classes. Teachers tend to get annoyed when students miss their classes when really it is the students and parents who should be the annoyed ones. You are paying to go to this school. Be sure to get your money's worth! 5. Play Intramurals - If you're in a sorority or fraternity you may be asked to play on the Intramural team, but many other students aren't even aware of intramurals. It's easy to get a team started and with soccer, volley ball, flag football, ultimate frisbee, basketball, and sometimes even ping pong to choose from, you'll be sure to find something that you want to do. To find out about University Intramural sports, just look up intramurals on the Auburn University website: auburn.edu. This is only five of many different things that a new Auburn student will learn about. There is a lot to do at a University and it can be a bit overwhelming to some people. Just remember to keep things in perspective and have a good time. War Eagle! |
