Lauren Burk, an 18-year-old student at Auburn University, died Tuesday, March 4, as a result of a gunshot wound. She was found alive (but died later at the hospital) some 9 miles from the Auburn campus, according to the March 5 article by Post Chronicle writer Jack Ryan called "Lauren Burk Photo: Auburn University Student Murdered, Car Fire". The Ryan article on Lauren Burk says her car was being engulfed in flames elsewhere at the time her body was found. Police are investigating this case and seeking out the alleged killer. 5 Ways College Students Can Stay Safe For you college students out there, it's important to follow a variety safety tips to make your time at college as safe as possible. Here's five ways that will help in this process, so you won't become another foul play statistic like Lauren Burk. Being Safe After Night Classes College students need to assess just how safe it is at night when class is over. They need to ascertain how much lighting there is in the parking lots, and/or if there are any poorly lit pathways to their dorms by checking for lighting during the daytime and doing an initial walk-through with classmates or friends the first time after night classes are completed. If the areas they walk at night are poorly lit, it's important, especially for female students, to always ask for escorts by either campus security or by their fellow classmates or friends to their dorms or cars. Once students have gotten to their cars, it's best to lock them up! Be aware of your surroundings at all times, don't just saunter to your dorm or car while listening to music or unnecessarily talking on your cell phone. You need to be aware of your surroundings at all times during the evening. Criminals look to catch victims alone and off guard! Don't Freely Give Out Personal Information The more information that criminals have on students, the easier it is to stalk and hurt students. It's advisable that students don't give out their personal information like their addresses, phone numbers, and pictures to campus publications that are distributed freely around school. If that means getting less publicity such as your profile in the college paper, so be it. Those things are basically forgotten by the law abiding public, but unfortunately kept on file by criminals. Staying Safe In Your Dorms And Apartments Staying safe is very much a common sense practice, especially when you are at your "college home"; i.e., your dorm room or apartment. When you get home, make sure you lock your doors. Locks are no good when they aren't being used. And if you don't have quality locks and deadbolts, insist that they be installed, even if that means you have to go through channels to insure your safety and pay for the locks yourself. And if you are on the first or second floor of a dorm or apartment, make sure you keep your windows locked, especially when you are gone. It doesn't matter if it's hot outside (get a fan), you need to make your home as safe as possible. Phones Can Help In An Emergency Even if you are secure at home and are using the buddy system while out at night, bad things can still potentially happen in a flash. Make sure that your home and cell phones have emergency numbers handy via speed dialing, so you can call get 911 or campus security in a flash if it appears you are in danger. If at all possible, carry your cell phone in your hand as you leave class en route to your car or dorm/apartment. That way, if you notice someone coming at you fast or in a threatening way, you can get that emergency call out. Scream out loud if you have to! If you see something suspicious, again, make a call to 911 or to the campus security. Walk around campus, and check where the emergency call boxes are during your orientation time because they might be available if your cell phone happens to not be working or you don't have one. Take A Self-Defense Class Many colleges have self-defense classes for students and the general public. Karate, judo, and other martial arts classes can be the difference in protecting yourself from an attacker. Such martial arts skills increase your chances in getting away from the criminal by being able to put some self-defense moves on that bad person. Don't be another tragic statistic like Lauren Burk. Do all that you can to stay safe in the college campus environment. |
